Equipment for the Parent on the Go: a Mobile
Baby Crib
Parents seem to be traveling with their children more
frequently and further than ever before. Often, nuclear families live in
different cities than their extended family, necessitating frequent travel for
holidays, or just to visit the grandparents. This trend to turn infants into
frequent flyers has created a wide range of travel products for parents and
babies, among them that of a mobile baby crib.
The Ultimate Mobile Baby Crib: The
Pack N Play
Pack N Plays are quickly becoming standard issue for new parents.
Similar to a playpen, Pack N Plays are typically constructed of plastic with
netting or mesh as the four sides. They are designed to be collapsible for easy
portability and most Pack N Plays come with a carrying bag or case as well.
While not designed to substitute for a full size crib in the
long-term, Pack N Plays are a good option for those parents who need a mobile
baby crib to use during short trips. Additionally, Pack N Plays are often used
as extra cribs for rooms in the house that families spend a lot of time in, to
remove the need to take the baby to their room for frequent naps.
Features of a Mobile Baby Crib
Modern Pack N Plays come with many additional features that
extend them beyond a simple mobile baby crib. For instance, most Pack N Plays
now include a bassinet attachment, a secondary bed that hangs inside the frame
of the mobile baby crib, raising the child off the mattress. These attachments
also include fabric bumpers similar to traditional cribs, creating a cozier
atmosphere for very young infants to sleep in.
Additionally, most mobile baby cribs also come with a
changing table attachment, which rests on top of the crib and provides a place
to change the baby. Again, this feature is probably most useful when the mobile
baby crib is being used in another room in the house, allowing parents to
easily change the baby without a changing table.
An Additional Option: The Mini-Crib
If parents are looking for a mobile baby crib that will be
used in the long-term, they may want to consider a mini-crib. These cribs are
smaller than normal cribs and therefore more portable, but they are not mobile
in the same sense as the Pack N Play, as they still require assembly and are
rather bulky items. Nonetheless, mini-cribs are typically on casters, and could
be used in a situation where the baby crib needed to be moved frequently in the
same room (e.g., if parents live in a loft apartment without dedicated space
for the crib).
